The mist rolls in off Loch Maree at first light, erasing the distinction between water and sky. The Torridon Sandstone ridges emerge slowly, ancient and unhurried, as they have done for three billion years. In the Scottish Highlands, you are not a visitor so much as a brief presence in an immeasurably old story.
Scotland's Land Reform Act grants walkers and campers the remarkable right to access virtually any land for recreational purposes — but that right comes with responsibility. The Highlands are not indestructible. The thin soils above the treeline, the delicate bog communities of the Flow Country, the Atlantic oak woodlands of the west coast — all are fragile in ways that are not immediately visible.
The Principles of Highland Camping
Camp on durable surfaces wherever possible — established pitches, rock, sand, or dry grass. Never camp in the same spot two nights in a row in sensitive habitats. Pitch away from water sources, not beside them, and carry waste out rather than burying it. A fire might feel essential on a Highland evening, but a lightweight stove is infinitely kinder to the landscape.
The great Highland camping locations — the shores of Loch Torridon, the Knoydart peninsula, the Cairngorm plateau — are extraordinary precisely because they have been treated with care. Our role is to ensure they remain so for the generations that follow us into the mist.
Gear That Earns Its Place
Sustainable camping begins with sustainable gear. At Nobrelto, we design with a simple test: will this product still be performing five, ten, fifteen years from now? Gear that lasts is gear that does not end up in landfill. We use recycled fabrics where performance allows, bio-based waterproof treatments in place of PFAS chemistry, and hardware built to be repaired rather than replaced.
The Highlands are unforgiving of poor equipment. A seam that fails on the Kintail ridge or a zip that jams above the Cairngorm plateau is not merely inconvenient — it can be dangerous. The best sustainable choice is gear built well enough that it never needs replacing. That has been our standard for 26 years, and it remains our north star.
